Pituitary is an organ with important functions of the endocrine system, producing hormones responsible for growth and development of the body as well as metabolic and reproductive functions. The MRI exam is the most effective method for exploring the pituitary gland, being much more sensitive than exploring tomography computer (CT).

The exam is performed with a special protocol with injection of contrast substance centered on the pituitary gland. The exam is usually indicated in the context of hormonal disturbances (mostly in excess prolactin production), for the detection and characterization of a pituitary tumor (frequently adenoma).

Exploration can usually differentiate between a pituitary tumor process from one located in the vecinity but outside of the pituitary gland, or may exclude a tumor at these levels, which are important diagnostically and therapeutically.
